Chitungwiza Meikles Mega Market to open soon.

Meikles Mega Market wholesale and retail chain has opened its sixth branch as it expands its footprint across the country. The sixth branch, in Gweru, was opened last week and is the second-largest in the group.

Meikles company secretary Thabani Mpofu said the branch had employed 29 out of 30 from the city to empower locals.

“We are bringing this (Meikles) shop to the people of Gweru, so it only makes sense to employ people from here also so that the city fully enjoys the benefits,” Mpofu said.

“This is the second-largest branch of Meikles Mega Market and it is the largest branch outside Harare.”

Meikles managing director Phillip Ellsie said that the chain was established to target the low-income market of the country and was eyeing to expand into other smaller towns.

“We want this to reach the low income market and those in the retail business. We are now targeting to move into Kwekwe, Bindura and Chitungwiza, among other cities, to bring the goods to the people,” Ellsie said.

“Our aim is to drive the prices of goods down as our way of giving back to the community so that they can stretch their dollar further.”

Ellsie added that they had recently secured a liquor selling licence for all their branches.

Guest of honour War Veterans’ minister Christopher Mutsvangwa praised Meikles for its efforts, saying the company was bringing to life the new economic blueprint, the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (ZimAsset).

“Meikles is one of the most remarkable names our country has and is making ZimAsset come true. I believe that at this rate, they will be going global soon,” Mutsvangwa said.

Mpofu revealed that Meikles Mega Market currently employs over 200 workers nationwide and that the number was expected to grow once the chain expanded into other cities and towns.
